These dogs, especially a long-haired variety, shed heavily, which makes them difficult to keep indoors. A daily brushing is required to keep a coat of a show dog in a perfect condition. It’s not recommended to bathe these dogs often; once or twice a year is enough. During the seasonal change from dense and wooly winter coat to a lighter summer coat, it is essential to strip out the dead, wooly coat. Ears of these dogs should be cleaned weekly to avoid infections. Teeth brushing and nail clipping are also important.

The coat of the dog is thick and double. Thus the dog actually can live outside even when the weather is rather cold. But these dogs are very people-oriented and need to be close to their owners. The dog varies in coat color, and most colors are accepted by the breed standard. Strong rich colors are preferred. Pale, washed-out colors and blues or livers are serious faults. A white dog must be disqualified. There may be the following faults in the coat: soft, silky, too long outer coat, woolly, curly, and open coat.
