Having been developed in the 1900s, this breed is a fairly recent one. The first club dedicated to the breed was formed in Germany; it was called the Phylax Society. The club has not existed long. Max von Stephanitz bought the first dog that was registered. He and Artur Meyer attended one of the earliest dog shows for all breeds ever held in Germany on April 3, 1899 where the dog was bought. Its name was Horand von Grafrath, previously it was called Hektor Linksrhein.
